What dinosaur has 500 teeth? All About Nigersaurus

Are you searching that What dinosaur has 500 teeth? So here the finding that “Nigersaurus” is a genus of rebbachisaurid sauropod dinosaur that lived during the middle Cretaceous Period, about 115–105 million years ago (mya) in what is now Niger. The generic name refers to the country where it was discovered. It contains a single known species, Nigersaurus taqueti. Nigersaurus was a small rebbachisaurid, measuring about 9 metres (30 ft) in length and weighing around 1,350 kilograms (2,980 lb). It had a short neck, a small head, and a long tail.

About Nigersaurus

Nigersaurus is known from more than 250 bones, which represents over 75% of the skeletal elements necessary to reconstruct its anatomy. This is the most complete rebbachisaurid skeleton known to date. It is one of the best understood sauropods from the Cretaceous Period, and has helped palaeontologists to reconstruct the anatomy of other rebbachisaurids.

Nigersaurus had a small head, with a short snout and a wide mouth. The teeth were restricted to the front of the mouth, and were peg-like, with blunt crowns. There were 30–35 teeth in the upper jaw and 26–29 in the lower jaw. Each maxillary tooth had a single root, while each mandibular tooth had two roots. The teeth were replaced frequently; each position in the jaw held a new tooth every two weeks.

The neck was short, measuring only about 1.1 metres (3.6 ft) long. The cervical vertebrae were slightly shorter and broader than those of other rebbachisaurids. Nigersaurus had 15 cervical vertebrae, more than any other known rebbachisaurid.

The back was straight, and the neural spines on the dorsal (back) vertebrae were tall and slender. There were 10 dorsal vertebrae. The tail was very long, measuring about 7 metres (23 ft) in length.

The limbs were short and robust. The humerus (upper arm bone) was about 1 metre (3.3 ft) long, while the femur (thigh bone) was about 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) long.

Nigersaurus is known from a single species, Nigersaurus taqueti. The specific name honours Philippe Taquet, a French palaeontologist who first proposed that rebbachisaurids were a distinct group of sauropods.

The holotype specimen, which includes most of the skeleton, was discovered in 1960 by a team of French and Nigerien palaeontologists led by Taquet. It was found in the Elrhaz Formation of Niger, which dates to the Albian stage of the middle Cretaceous Period, about 110 million years ago.

A second specimen, which consists of several bones from the hindlimb and tail, was discovered in the same formation in 1965. It is housed at the Musée national d’histoire naturelle in Paris, France.
