Replicated, which sells tools that help software makers create and deploy on-premises versions of their applications, raises $50M Series C led by Owl Rock: Replicated Series Rockwheatleysiliconangle

Replicated Series Rockwheatleysiliconangle: Replicated, a startup that helps software makers create and deploy on-premises versions of their applications, has announced that it has closed $50M in Series C funding led by Owl Rock Partners. Replicated’s main product is an on-premises version of Docker that lets companies run company-specific legacy apps alongside new containerized apps.

“This new round of funding will allow us to continue innovating and expanding our product portfolio,” said Replicated cofounder and CEO Bich Ha. “Replicated was founded out of our own experiences as software engineers who ran into the same problems over and over. We know how hard it is to shift an organization’s mindset to a new way of thinking, but we believe we’re now in a position to help more organizations make that change fast.”

The new funds will go toward building Replicated’s software development capabilities, helping customers and partners experiment with Docker on their own infrastructure, accelerating international expansion and helping the company better meet demand from the global developer community. Replicated said it will begin to sell its on-premises version of Docker in early 2017.

“We constantly hear success stories from organizations that have adopted Docker and Replicated’s solutions with the goal to bring their apps into the cloud,” said Owl Rock Partners’ Abhi Nemani. “Replicated has a valuable product that helps software developers get their applications running on top of the infrastructure they already have. With this funding, we’re confident this approach can open up new opportunities for our clientele.

Replicated was founded out of its founders’ experiences as software engineers. Bich joined the Android team at Google while Gil joined Mozilla. After doing a stint in the venture-capital world, they decided to put their knowledge to use by building a company that helps developers solve these problems.

“Working at large companies is often frustrating and time-consuming because of the systems in place,” said Bich. “It’s not clear what applications will be developed or where they’ll end up running. We felt it would be better if the business and engineering sides worked together to make the choices on how this software will be used in the future.”

Replicated’s first product – an on-premises version of Docker – lets companies run both cloud-based and legacy apps on top of their existing infrastructure. This ensures that every app gets the best infrastructure for performance, efficiency and security.

“Docker’s ability to virtualize the operating system has revolutionized the application development process,” said Austin Che, a partner at Greylock. “However, most organizations are still using their existing data centers to host containers and manage their modern applications. Replicated is helping companies bridge the gap between containers and legacy applications by seamlessly running apps on-premises.”

Replicated is a graduate of Y Combinator’s Winter 2014 class with $1.4M in seed funding.
